Biržų lopšelis-darželis “Drugelis” works with children from 1 until 6 years old. It is an innovation educational institution providing social-educational services for the kids, their families, traditions and customs. The mission is to help the children to satisfy the cultural, ethnic, social and cognitive needs and to prepare for successful learning according to primary education curriculum.

Biržų lopšelis-darželis “Drugelis” trabaja con niños desde los 1 hasta los 6 años. Se trata de una una institución educativa de innovación que ofrece servicios socioeducativos para los niños, sus familias, tradiciones y costumbres. La misión es ayudar a los niños a satisfacer las necesidades culturales, étnicas, sociales y cognitivas y prepararse para el aprendizaje exitoso de acuerdo con el currículo de educación primaria.

Tareas del voluntario - Volunteer's tasks

Marina has worked 36 hours per week. She has been working as an assistance to educators in everyday activities, as an assistance to art educator participating in everyday music activities and organizing events, and as an assistance to physical training educator organizing gym class for the children. Marina has taught English and Spanish’s languages to the workers and children from the kindergarten.

Marina ha trabajado 36 horas por semana. Ella ha estado trabajando como ayudante de los educadores en las actividades diarias, como ayudante del profesor de arte participando en las actividades diarias de música y organizando eventos, y como ayudante del profesor de deporte organizando clases de gimnasia para los niños. Marina ha enseñado inglés y español a los trabajadores y niños del colegio.

Pre-departure training: 14th July 2016 by YesEuropa - Asociación "Building Bridges".

On-arrival training: 13th to 16^th of September 2016 in “Margio krantas” (Trakai) by the Lithuanian National Agency.

Mid-term training: 20th to 24th of March 2017 in “Trasalis” (Trakai) by the Lithuanian National Agency.

Curso antes de la salida: el 14 de Julio del 2016 por YesEuropa - Asociación "Building Bridges".

Curso a la llegada: del 13 al 16 de Septiembre del 2016 en “Margio krantas” (Trakai) por la Agencia Nacional de Lituania.

Curso a mitad de término: del 20 al 24 de Marzo en “Trasalis” (Trakai) por la Agencia Nacional de Lituania.

Competences

1) Communication in the mother tongue

During this year I have had the possibility to teach Spanish in my work place and to other volunteers. Also, I have realized here that the languages some other volunteers speak have the same syntactic structure and they have words in common with my mother tongue, as Greek, Italian and Portuguese language.

Durante este año, he tenido la posibilidad de enseñar español a otros voluntarios así como en mi lugar de trabajo. Además, me he dado cuenta de que hay varios idiomas en el mundo con la misma estructura sintáctica y con los cuales se comparten varias palabras, como por ejemplo, el griego, el italiano y el portugués.

2) Communication in foreign languages

First of all, using the English language at work and in my leisure time, I improved my language skills, both in speaking and understanding, therefore I am able to understand a wide range of demanding, I can express ideas fluently and use the language flexibly and effectively in a clear and well-structured way. 

Also, during this year I have improved my reading and listening comprehension by reading English texts and watching English films.

Moreover travelling around more countries than Lithuania I needed to speak in English with people I don’t know, as an example, doing Couch Surfing.

Furthermore I taught English language to kindergarten workers and children explaining everything only in English.

Second of all, due to I have received some Lithuanian lesson and using the Lithuanian language at work and in the public places I can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type, mainly the daily communication with kindergarten kids and workers. In addition I am able to introduce myself and others and can ask and answer personal questions.

Finally, after a longer time of only using English it is difficult to form sentences in your own mother tongue and you tend to use English expressions and idioms. That shows the impact that the everyday usage of the foreign language has and can be seen as a positive sign of my progress in learning that language.

Lo primero de todo, dado que he usado el inglés a la hora de comunicarme en el colegio/jardín de infancia y en mi tiempo libre, he mejorado mis habilidades lingüísticas en habla y comprensión notablemente, además, soy capaz de entender una amplia gama de exigencias. Puedo expresar ideas fluentemente, usar el lenguaje de forma flexible, eficiente, clara y bien estructurada. He de añadir que durante este año he mejorado mi comprensión lectora y auditiva en inglés gracias a las películas y textos que he estado viendo y leyendo.  

Además, a la hora de viajar y moverme por más países diferentes a Lituania, he necesitado hablar en inglés con gente que no conocía, como por ejemplo, haciendo Couch Surfing.

También, durante este año he estado enseñando inglés a los profesores y niños del colegio y, ya que no teníamos otro idioma en común, he tenido la necesidad de explicar todo directamente en inglés.

Lo segundo, dado que he asistido a clases de lituano y, al realizar un voluntariado en Lituania, he necesitado comunicarme en ese idioma en el colegio/jardín de infancia (con los niños y trabajadores) así como en los establecimientos públicos, he de reconocer que puedo usar expresiones familiares del día a día así como frases muy básicas dirigidas a una necesidad en concreto, principalmente la comunicación diaria con los niños y trabajadores del colegio/jardín de infancia. Además, yo capaz de presentar a otras personas y a mí misma así como de preguntar y responder preguntas personales.

Por último, después de un largo tiempo usando solo el inglés me he dado cuenta de que es complicado realizar frases en tu propio idioma y tiendes a usar expresiones y modismos que provienen del inglés. Esto nos muestra el impacto del uso diario de una lengua extranjera y, por consecuente, se trata de un signo positivo a la hora de determinar un progreso en el aprendizaje de idiomas.

3) Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology

The financial management of an independent life taught me how to survive with small sum of money, so every month I needed to calculate my budget: food, internet, hygienic and personal expenses.

La vida independiente fuera del hogar familiar me ha enseñado a administrarme económicamente de cara a poder llegar a fin de mes con una cantidad muy pequeña de dinero, por lo que todos los meses he necesitado calcular mi presupuesto para la comida, el internet, gastos higiénicos y personales.

4) Digital competence

Setting up a photography exhibition at the kindergarten taught me how to use professional digital camera and to edit photographs using Photoshop. In addition, I have learnt how to use the SMART interactive board.

Gracias a la exhibición que he realizado sobre fotografía en el colegio/jardín de infancia, he aprendido a usar una cámara de fotos profesional así como su posterior edición con Photoshop. Además, durante este año he aprendido a usar una pizarra digital inteligente dado que la he tenido a mi alcance para realizar varias actividades con los niños en el colegio.

5) Learning to learn

As an assistant to teachers, art educators and physical training educator in the kindergarten I have learnt how to implement everyday activities, prepare and lead workshops, games inside and outside; organize meetings and educational excursions to nature; prepare and implement projects; participate in everyday music activities; arrange events and festivals in the kindergarten; prepare games in sports hall; do PE in the morning; program relay races, small football and basketball games; and organize sport activities in the playground and other spaces.

During this year I have also learnt about the independent life, to solve the problems by myself and to survive an European winter. On another hand, I have dealt with the cultural shocks as the north and south cultures are very different.

Besides I have developed some other skills: flexibility, patience, teamwork, communication, empathy, etc.

Como ayudante voluntaria de los educadores, profesores de arte y de gimnasia durante este curso escolar del colegio/jardín de infancia, he aprendido a realizar las actividades cotidianas de este, preparar y dirigir talleres y juegos dentro y fuera del aula; organizar reuniones y excursiones educativas a la naturaleza; preparar e implementar proyectos; participar en las actividades diarias del aula de música; organizar eventos y festivales dentro del colegio/jardín de infancia; preparar juegos y actividades deportivas; liderar la clase de gimnasia todas las mañanas; programar carreras de relevos, partidos de fútbol y de baloncesto; y organizar actividades deportivas en el patio del colegio/jardín de infancia y otros espacios.

Durante este año también he aprendido a llevar a cabo el estilo de vida independiente, resolviendo los problemas por mí misma y sobreviviendo al invierno Europeo. Por otro lado, he lidiado con el shock cultural dado que el norte y el sur de Europa llevan estilos de vida muy distantes.

Además, he desarrollado otras habilidades como la flexibilidad, la paciencia, el trabajo en equipo, la comunicación, la empatía, etc.

6) Social and civic competences

First of all, my daily work with children taught me a lot about how to work with them in kindergarten environment. Pedagogy through hands-on experience showed to me that improvisation, common sense and experience is more important in everyday life than textbook theory. Moreover, it is a challenge to be authoritative, friendly and caring at the same time. To work with children one needs motivation, empathy and patience.

Second of all, I have dealt with the cultural shock from the beginning of the project as my culture is quite different to a post-soviet and Nordic countries. Furthermore, during the voluntary year I have lived with more volunteers from different countries and I have even shared bedroom with another volunteer during this year.

Lo primero de todo, el trabajo diario con niños me ha enseñado mucho sobre cómo trabajar con ellos dentro de un ambiente educativo. La pedagogía educativa que se adquiere a través de la experiencia práctica me ha me ha enseñado que la improvisación junto con el sentido común y la experiencia es más importante en la vida diaria que la teoría adquirida a través de los libros de texto. Además, es un reto ser autoritario, amigable y cuidador al mismo tiempo. Para trabajar con niños se necesita motivación, empatía y paciencia.

Por otro lado, he tenido que lidiar con el shock cultural desde el principio del proyecto ya que la cultura y costumbres españolas son muy diferentes a la de los países post soviéticos y nórdicos. He de añadir que durante este año he compartido piso y habitación con más voluntarios de diferentes países.

7) Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship:

During this year I have had the possibility to do two different projects in the kindergarten. The first one was related to photography and the second one to face painting.  For the photography project I did an exhibition in the kindergarten with photographs of children, and for the second one the kids and I did a theatre play based on some fairy tales and I did the make-up and face painting.

In addition, during this year I have done many new things like: I sang in a choir, I had some theatre lessons and I travelled to more than five different counties.

Durante este año he tenido la posibilidad de realizar dos proyectos en el colegio/jardín de infancia en el que he realizado el voluntariado. El primero estaba relacionado con la fotografía, mientras que el segundo con el pintacaras. Para el proyecto de fotografía realicé una exposición fotográfica con las fotografías de los niños, y el segundo se basó en la representación de algunas obras de teatro basadas en cuentos en las que tuve la oportunidad de participar y poder llevar a cabo el maquillaje y pintacaras.

Además, durante este año he probado cosas nuevas desde cantar en un coro, recibir clases de teatro hasta viajar a más de cinco países.

8) Cultural awareness and expression

Firstly, leaving our comfort zone we are able to become more aware of our own and different culture and consequently we become more tolerant of some habits or behaviour that are completely different in another country. However, there is always an adaptation phase to the new life style and after a while you get used to other habits and customs.

Secondly, I have got to know a great deal about European cultures through meeting up with other European volunteers who were doing an EVS in Lithuania. Despite all the differences, you can still see some common traits in all those cultures, which makes us somehow closer together.

Finally, during this year I have had the opportunity to represent my own culture and country through some presentations in high schools, elementary schools, kindergartens, etc.

Lo primero de todo, he de mencionar que cuando salimos de nuestra zona de confort somos capaces de ser más conscientes de nuestra propia cultura así como de la cultura ajena y, en consecuencia, nos volvemos más tolerantes respecto a algunas costumbres o comportamientos que son totalmente diferentes a los nuestros. Sin embargo, siempre hay una fase de adaptación al nuevo estilo de vida y, después de un tiempo, tiendes a acostumbrarte a estos nuevos hábitos y costumbres.

Lo segundo, he de mencionar que durante este año he tenido la grata posibilidad de estar en contacto con más voluntarios europeos, y por tanto, conocer más culturas que, a pesar de todas las diferencias, he podido observar rasgos similares entre ellas, proceso que nos ha hecho sentirnos más cercanos los unos de los otros.
